Tropical storm forces delay in CARIFESTA Opening Ceremony

Might create havoc in Windward Islands

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TROPICAL STORM HARVEY has already started to create havoc in the Windward Islands chain as it has forced organizers of CARIFESTA 13 in Barbados to postpone the Opening Ceremony.

The postponement was done out of safety for the participants and patrons because the ceremony is scheduled to be held as an outdoor activity at the Kensington Oval.

A report published on the festival’s website confirmed the announcement, as the Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and the Southern Caribbean islands brace for the passage of three tropical disturbances.

The Opening Ceremony was slated for this evening (Aug. 18) and it is likely not be held tomorrow due to the approaching storm.

Announcement of the postponement was made on Wednesday by Barbados Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Stephan Lashley.

“The national response ahead of the system has forced the cancellation of the mandatory dress rehearsal which was scheduled to be held at Kensington Oval this evening…Immediate measures have also had to be taken to safeguard equipment at the venue.”
